You Do Not Choose the Future. You Choose History.
There is a question that sits underneath everything we have said, and it deserves a direct answer. If you cannot touch Actual, and you cannot touch Expectation, are you free at all?
You are. But your freedom is not where you have been told it is.
The old picture
The old picture of freedom goes something like this. You stand at a crossroads. Several futures lie ahead of you. You look them over, choose one, and walk toward it, and because you chose it, it arrives.
In that picture, freedom is the power to select the future.
But look at the picture closely and it falls apart. The future is him, the Unknowable Future. You have never seen any part of him. Nothing you can see has arrived yet, and nothing that has arrived is still the future. You cannot choose among things you cannot see. And you certainly cannot make one of them arrive by wanting it. He leans toward nothing, and he does not lean toward your preferences either.
Where freedom actually is
Here is where freedom is.
Reality arrives. Whatever the quotient is, it lands. And in that moment, once it has landed, more than one action remains possible. You can speak or stay silent. You can move toward or away. You can hold on or let go. You can build or wait.
That is the whole of your freedom, and it is real. You are not free because you stand outside of cause and effect and pick which future will come. You are free because, after the present has arrived, there is more than one thing you can do with it.
So freedom lives entirely on the left side of the equation. Not in the numerator, which is finished. Not in the denominator, which is brought. In what you do with the Reality you have.
Consciousness makes history
And here is what follows, the line I care about most in this part of the book.
Consciousness does not manufacture the future. Consciousness manufactures history.
Every time you act, you add something to the record. That something then becomes part of the past, part of her, permanent. So what your freedom produces is not a future of your choosing. It is a history of your making.
We said this about him at the very start: every act of love is an act of history making. Now we can say it about you. Every act, loving or not, is history making. You are, all day long, writing the record that will arrive tomorrow as part of the Actual. That is what your freedom is for.
Fear and hope
This also tells us something uncomfortable about two of the most familiar human feelings.
Fear is a story about a future you believe will be worse than you expect. Hope is a story about a future you believe will be better than you expect. Both are attempts to write the numerator in advance. Both take a future that has not arrived and treat it as though it had.
That is fiction. I do not mean it is always wrong; sometimes the feared thing comes, and sometimes the hoped-for thing does. I mean it is not Actual. The numerator is the finished past, and fear and hope are both written in the place where the numerator will eventually be, before it has been written.
This is why fear and hope can both exhaust you. You are living in a fraction whose top has been replaced by a story. The story may be dark or bright, but either way it is not what is arriving, and so you are never quite meeting what is.
I do not say this to take hope away from you. Hope is useful as direction; it is dangerous only as ownership. A compass is not a deed. And fear is not useless either; it often points at something real that could be prepared for.
The distinction that has helped me most is between preparation and prepayment. Preparation changes what is here: you check the brakes, you save the money, you make the call. Prepayment only changes how long you occupy what is not here. Fear sends you an invoice for pain on account, and paying it early buys no discount when the bill comes. Hope books joy on credit, and when the joy does not come, the disappointment feels like theft, though nothing was ever issued.
So pay fear in information: what do I actually know? Pay hope in direction: which way is this pointing me? And pay Reality, the only thing actually arriving, with presence. That leaves you standing where your freedom is: on the action available to you now, the history you can make today.
What history you choose
If you cannot choose the future, then the most important choice you have is what history to make.
That choice is always open. It is open on good days and on terrible ones. It is open when your Expectation is crushing you and when the AAH is lifting you off the ground. In any Reality, however it arrived, there is more than one action. And each action becomes something that happened, something that cannot be undone, something that will come back to you as Actual and teach your Prediction what the world is like.
You do not choose the future. You choose history. And history, in time, chooses what you will expect.
