The Road Runs Through the Record
We have arrived at the practical heart of the book. If you skipped everything else and read only this chapter, you would have most of what I have to offer about how a life actually changes.
It comes down to a single path, and the path runs one way.
The path
Here it is, step by step.
You act on Reality. Whatever the quotient is, whatever the moment has delivered, you do something.
Your action leaves artifacts. A word spoken. A letter sent. A meal cooked. A door closed, or opened. A day spent at the gym or on the couch. Something now exists in the world that did not exist before, or something that did exist has changed.
Artifacts become history. The moment passes, and what you did is now part of what happened. It has crossed her event horizon. It is sealed into the Immutable Past, where nothing can ever undo it.
History is Actual. The next time the world hands you something, part of what it hands you is the consequence of what you did. You are, in a real sense, receiving your own history back.
And only Actual retrains Prediction. Your subconscious is watching what keeps arriving. Over time, it adjusts its forecast to match. The denominator moves.
Act. Artifact. History. Actual. Prediction. That is the road.
One way, and slow
Notice two things about this road.
It runs one way. There is no route from your intentions straight to your denominator. There is no shortcut from what you wish to what you expect. Every change to Expectation, every one, travels through the record of what actually happened. You cannot get there by any other means.
And it is slow. One action is one piece of history. One piece of history is a small part of what arrives. Your Prediction is patient and skeptical; it wants to see the new pattern many times before it believes it. That is why change takes as long as it does. It is not that you are weak. It is that the road is long.
Money and words
Once you see this road, a lot of puzzles about the world start to make sense.
Consider money. People speak as though money could buy anything, including respect, standing, love. But money does not reach into anyone's denominator. Nothing does. What money buys is artifacts: a name on a building, a seat at a table, an entry in a record. Those artifacts may, over time, teach other people's Predictions something. Or they may not. The money bought the artifact. The artifact does the teaching, if any teaching happens at all, and it does it slowly, in its own time.
Consider words. An institution that has lost people's trust often responds by restating its values. A new mission statement. A heartfelt announcement. But a statement of values is an attempt to reach directly into the Ideal, and that is impossible. People's Expectations of the institution will not move because of what it says it is. They will move only because of what it does, artifact by artifact, over roughly as long as it took to lose them. The road back is made of the same material as the road out.
Consider the person who has hurt you and apologizes beautifully. The apology is real and it matters. It is itself an action, an artifact. But it is one artifact. Your Prediction of them was built from many. What will retrain it is not a single eloquent moment but a long accumulation of different moments. You are not being stubborn when you find you cannot simply decide to trust them again. You are being lawful.
The same road for every Actualizer
This road is not only for people.
Recall that an Actualizer is anything that has a Reality: a person, a family, a company, a nation. Every Actualizer walks the same road. A marriage changes its own Expectation only through what the two people in it do, over and over, until it becomes the history of that marriage. A company changes what the market expects of it only through what it does, reported and repeated, until it becomes the record. A country changes what its people expect of it only through what it actually does to them.
No Actualizer, however powerful, can hack the denominator. Not by decree. Not by advertising. Not by force. The only road runs through the record.
Freedom
I find this road enormously freeing, and I want to say why.
If your Expectation could be changed directly, then every failure to feel differently would be your fault. You would be failing at a task you ought to be able to do. But it cannot be changed directly. So you are released from that task entirely.
What is left is the one task you can actually do: the next action. Not the next feeling. Not the next belief. The next thing you add to the record of the world.
That task is always available. It does not require you to feel ready. It does not require you to believe it will work. It only requires you to do it, and then to do it again. The denominator will follow, as it has always followed, slowly and faithfully, behind the history you make.
